RAAM 2010: CREW MEMBERS

NAME:
Roger Kalisiak

HOME TOWN:
Hoffman Estates, Illinois

SKILLS:
Love to drive, day or night, and navigate with the old fashion map - not too familiar with the GPS systems but willing to learn. I am a Certified Athletic Trainer - I try to look at the big picture and help athletes accomplish their goals while keeping their health in mind - if a massage is needed or an ice bag or whatever it takes for the athlete to meet their goals and it is safe for all involved then I try to make it happen. Can be flexible with crew members and sleep when needed - over the years I have been on others' schedules and seem to adapt well. I enjoy a good meal but I am comfortable with lite meals that allow me to snack on fruits and vegetables, diet pepsi, orange juice, and water along with Gatorade. I think that my role would be to help monitor Paul's health and supply objective decisions to the Crew Chief and team as to how to best manage Paul's health so that he can make the most of his performance.

EXPERIENCE:
Never crewed before but have been part of athletic teams for the past 36+ years as an Athletic Trainer.  Love to cycle in my area but never have been competitive at cycling. Have played golf and love to get in a workout each day - usually a run of 2-4 miles as tolerated. Usually I am taking care of others, so I am used to working as an individual that benefits the team as a whole.

EXPECTATIONS:
For us to finish the race as a team - I think that to be part of this experience, it will be an intense adventure that Paul as well as the rest of us will experience many highs and lows - we should be able to work together to help Paul achieve his goal of finishing the race in the time/goals he has set out to achieve.  My satisfaction will be if we meet those goals as a team.

BACKGROUND:
Certified Athletic Trainer, 58 years old; married with two grown children and a grandson.  I know Paul through my work at Northern Illinois University and volunteered my time to him after hearing that he qualified for the RAAM.
